POSITION PURPOSE
Guided by a Destination Vision Plan, Visit Indy’s Destination Development team works in partnership with city, state, civic, philanthropic, and private sector partners on the long-term enhancement of Indianapolis as a great place to live, work, and visit. Using skillsets that mix urban planning, research, community engagement, marketing, and community visioning, the team works to analyze tourism market performance, identify tourism product deficiencies and opportunities, and encourage or support implementation partners.
 
The intern assists with development and implementation of community programs, marketing and promotion efforts relating to destination development projects, managing development and city-tracking systems, and supporting general project management needs. The Destination Development Intern will work approximately 20 hours per week. All Visit Indy team members reflect the organization’s “3 Ps” culture – productive, positive, and progressive.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist in the development, marketing, and management of resident-focused engagement, education, and training programs related to tourism product development.
  • Assist in awareness-building and promotional marketing campaigns related to issues, opportunities, or projects in the Destination Vision plan.
  • Manage and enhance data, research, and information systems to monitor performance of the tourism ecosystem in Indianapolis and competitor cities.
  • Monitor local news for updates related to the Destination Vision Plan and incorporating them into the Wordpress-powered indydestinationvisionplan.com website.
  • Monitor local news for downtown and tourism-related project announcements and incorporating them into an internal tracking system.
  • Assist in the implementation of planning and implementation of the Destination Vision Plan, currently focused on regional activation of the White River, storytelling the regional trails network, and exploring the future of the convention district.
 
    OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Participates in weekly destination development team meetings.
  • Attends destination development project meetings.
  • Provides basic administrative assistance for project management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.
 
  • Enrollment in a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree program required. Ideal programs of study include urban planning, urban design, public administration, tourism development, marketing, public relations, and informatics.
  • Junior/Senior collegiate standing or a minimum of two full years of college coursework completed.
  • Previous internship experience a plus.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage projects, including setting and following schedules, managing communications with partners, proactively identifying and addressing challenges, and reporting on progress.
  • Experience with program or curriculum development, educational theory, or teaching.
  • Solid understanding of how to conduct online data research as well as data gathering and verification.
  • Understanding of graphic design and desktop publishing software and principles
  • Proficient computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Internet browsers.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Wordpress CMS, ArcGIS online, and DOMO software platforms.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage time.
  • Ability to be flexible and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to think logically in order to troubleshoot and make recommendations for problems as identified.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
