POSITION PURPOSE
The Communications Intern will assist Visit Indy’s marketing and communications department by carrying out various activities related to the promotion of the City of Indianapolis. This includes assisting with pitch writing, radio promotions, blogging, etc. The Communications Intern will work approximately 20 hours per week. All Visit Indy team members reflect the organization’s “3 Ps” culture – productive, positive and progressive.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides support to the marketing and communications department by assisting with various activities to promote the City of Indianapolis; includes working with social media, blogging, print, promotions, etc.
  • Drafts various press releases and media pitches for placement in regional/national media outlets; writes for the DoingIndy.com blog site on a weekly basis; research content as necessary.
  • Assists in media relations work for seasonal events and tourism initiatives (i.e. Holiday Promotions, Exhibit Openings)
  • Manages radio promotions for a dozen radio partners regionally in preparation for weekend getaway giveaways.
  • Assists with promotional/advertising campaign fulfillment and planning and coordination of media hosting.
    OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Attends team meetings, press conferences, partner meetings as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.
 
  • Enrollment in a marketing/communications/public relations or related bachelor’s degree program required.
  • Junior/Senior collegiate standing or a minimum of two full years of college coursework completed.
  • Experience with pitch writing and blogging highly preferred.
  • Involvement in a collegiate chapter of a public relations association highly preferred.
  • Previous internship experience a plus.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to write reports, correspondence, pitches, blogs, and other business-related communications.
  • Ability to think logically in order to troubleshoot and make recommendations for problems as identified.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Ability to be flexible and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • This position requires some physical activity, such as reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; it requires occasional pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and moving (up to 15 pounds).

  • Ability to move in and between various facilities and handle exposure to inclement weather.
